The new Minister for the Middle East, Rt. Hon. James Cleverly MP, has condemned “indiscriminate attacks against civilians” by terror groups in Gaza.

In response to a Written Question on the subject this week, the Middle East Minister described recent attacks against Israelis as “unacceptable and unjustifiable”. He said: “The ongoing decision by Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad to embrace violence and reject the Quartet Principles lies at the heart of the Gaza situation”.

Mr Cleverly added that the UK “fully supports Israel’s right to self-defence and to defend its citizens from such acts of terror”, and called on the terror groups to “cease all actions that are violent or provocative, or that put civilian lives at risk”.

Over 90 rockets have been launched towards Israel in 2020 so far, many by Palestinian Islamic Jihad – an Iranian proxy. At least 1,230 rockets were fired from Gaza towards Israel in 2019.
