Last week, Hamas-run security forces arrested several peace activists in Gaza on treason charges after they took part in a web conference with Israeli left-leaning campaigners.

The Hamas-run Interior Ministry said Rami Aman, founder of the Gaza Youth Committee, and the five other activists were accused of “holding a normalisation activity with the Israeli occupation”.

Gaza’s Hamas-run interior ministry said that “establishing any activity or communication with the Israeli occupation under any excuse is a crime punishable by law, and is treason against our people”.

The activists held a nearly two-hour meeting on Monday over Zoom, an online conferencing service, discussing issues of common interest, including the coronavirus pandemic.

Debate has flared on social networks, with some Palestinians condemning the latest arrests and others supporting Hamas’s actions.
