Saudi Arabia’s King Salman used his platform at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) this week to praise US President Donald Trump’s administration’s efforts to bring about peace in the region.
King Salman said:”[I] support the efforts of the current US administration to bring peace in the Middle East by bringing Israel and Palestinians together at the negotiating table to reach a fair agreement”.
He added: “Peace in the Middle East is our strategic option and we will spare no option toward achieving a bright future where peace stability coexistence among all the region’s people prevail”.
The king reiterated Saudi Arabia’s proposition of the 2002 Arab Peace Plan, which seeks to ensure that “the Palestinian people would regain their legitimate rights establishing independent statehood with east Jerusalem as its capital”.
His speech follows historic normalisation agreements between Israel and the UAE and Bahrain this month.
It is speculated that further normalisation agreements between Israel and other Arab states may follow, including with Saudi Arabia.
