Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Home Secretary Priti Patel have condemned a violent antisemitic attack that happened in Stamford Hill in London on the eve of Holocaust Memorial Day, as “despicable”.
The verified twitter account for StopAntisemitism.org tweeted the video of the attack, where two visibly Orthodox Jewish men were beaten outside a bakery. The video was retweeted and quote tweeted over 1200 times – including by members of the Cabinet.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson reacted to the footage on Twitter, stating: “I’m appalled by this despicable footage, and I thank police for making a swift arrest”.
He added: “This attack is a terrible reminder, on Holocaust Memorial Day, that such prejudice is not consigned to history, but remains a very real problem in society. We must stamp out antisemitism”.
In a tweet, Home Secretary Rt. Hon. Priti Patel called the attacked “absolutely despicable” and a “sickening reminder” of what happens when antisemitism takes root in the UK. She stated: “We won’t tolerate abuse towards our Jewish community”.
Hertsmere MP and Chair of the Conservative Party Rt. Hon. Oliver Dowden MP also condemned the attack as “absolutely disgusting behaviour”.
He underlined: “No one deserves to be attacked like this. On the Eve of Holocaust Memorial Day, it is an awful reminder of the work we still need to do to weed out antisemitism. The perpetrator must face the full weight of the law”.
