The IDF have announced they have uncovered and incapacitated a terror tunnel dug by Hamas that stretched from Northern Gaza into Israeli territory. IDF officials said the tunnel posed no immediate danger as it did not penetrate the underground border defences.

The innovative underground wall, built to protect Israel’s southern towns, meant the terror tunnel did not pose a threat to Israeli citizens living near the border. The IDF also uses a number of radar arrays and high-tech surveillance sensors to detect for tunnel digging activity. IDF Brig. Gen. Nimrod Aloni said in a statement: “This is an attack tunnel with two branches, which crossed into Israeli territory but did not cross the security barrier and there did not pose a risk to the residents of Israel at any stage”.

The IDF incapacitated the tunnel by pouring concrete into its passages, a technique which has been used by them in the past. Officials did not state how deep the tunnel was built but did say the entrance was in Gaza city. The destruction of the tunnel is part of what the IDF called a “constant and ongoing effort to locate terror tunnels and neutralise them”.
