The Israel National Drone Initiative (INDI) has launched the first ever air taxi test flights. Miri Regev, the Transportation Minister, called the project “the first initiative of its kind in the world”, praising the “multidisciplinary examination of new technologies”. The air taxis are designed for civilian transportation and delivery services and are the results of a two-year government led initiative, together with regulators and private firms. From a 60 million NIS investment, the programme aims to reduce traffic congestion and to more efficiently provide public services.
11 drone-operating and delivery businesses took part in the initial test of the eVTOL autonomous electric flying vehicles, which take-off and land vertically and can traverse long distances. The tests took place through controlled urban environments whilst the machines were carrying heavy loads. Experts say that soon people will be able to travel on the innovative aircrafts. AIR ZERO, Cando Drones, Dronery, Ehang and Down Wind contributed to the drones’ test flights with their own air taxi projects.
For one week every month for the next two years, the flights will continue in a controlled environment over a distance of up to 93 miles. Unlike other developed countries, Israel’s airspace is some of the most densely populated due to its small territory, commercial and military activity. The Israeli Air Force, Israel Airports Authority Ltd and private companies including Ayalon Highways, High Lander and Robotican will work alongside local municipalities to conduct flight demonstrations throughout the country. A system of aerial routes is being developed simultaneously so that different types of drones can fly for purposes ranging from healthcare and commerce to security and transportation, without intervals or unforeseen accidents.
The entire initiative marks a milestone for the development of global drone technology and is thought to usher in dynamic opportunities for Israeli firms.
