Home Secretary Amber Rudd MP spoke of the “immense” contribution of Britain’s Jewish community at the Board of Deputies’ Parliamentary Chanukah reception on Monday, and underlined the Government’s commitment to fighting anti-Semitism.
The Home Secretary’s comments followed Prime Minister Theresa May’s announcement at CFI’s Annual Business Lunch that the UK would formally adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) working definition of anti-Semitism.
The Home Secretary said: “Today the Prime Minister made her announcement to formally accept the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of anti-Semitism. This will make it more straightforward to get prosecutions so that we can call out and take action against those who undertake antisemitic attacks”.
Rt. Hon. Amber Rudd MP emphasised: “The contribution of the Jewish community of this country has been immense and I want to ensure that the Government always recognises that so that we can all benefit from it… The Jewish community is a model of integration but despite that there are terrible people who wish to do terrible things”.
The event, which was hosted by Apprenticeships and Skills Minister Rt. Hon. Robert Halfon MP, was attended by over 100 parliamentarians, Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis, and Israel’s Deputy Foreign Minister Tzipi Hotovely.
