On Tuesday, British Ambassador to Israel, H. E. David Quarrey, attended the launch of a new children’s football league in Jaffa and took part in a football match between Embassy staff and Arab and Jewish Israeli children.
At the launch of the British Embassy and Equalizer Jaffa league, British Ambassador Quarrey said: “Following the success of the programme in northern Israel, I am delighted to announce the launch of the first British Embassy and Equalizer Jaffa League, which will bring Jewish and Arab children together through football”.
He added: “I have seen the great work The Equalizer has already done in using sport to break down barriers and bring communities together. I am pleased we can offer this opportunity to children in Jaffa”.
The Equalizer programme, established initially in the Galil region three years ago, brings together Arab and Jewish children and enables them to find common ground in their shared love of football.
It is an educational and social NGO run in collaboration with the education, sport and public security ministries in Israel, with the support of the British Embassy.
The programme is run by volunteers who work with local schools to provide football-based activities for Jewish and Arab Israelis aged 10-12 throughout the year.
