A rocket attack by an Iran-backed militia group on the Taji military base north of Baghdad in Iraq killed one British soldier and two Americans as well as injuring 12 other British and US personnel, on Wednesday night.
Lance Corporal Brodie Gillon, aged 26, along with two American troops, was killed when 15 small rockets hit the military camp.
In a tribute yesterday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: ‘It is with deep sadness that I learned that a UK soldier was killed in the attack at the Taji military base last night. My thoughts go out to their loved ones at this extremely difficult time.
The attack was said to be carried by a Iran-back militia group Kataib Hezbollah. The Pentagon said in a statement that US forces launched airstrikes on facilities linked to the militia across Iraq on Friday, including five storage facilities that housed weapons used in attacks on coalition troops.
Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab today welcomed US retaliatory air strikes in Iraq, calling them a “swift, decisive and proportionate” response.
Mr Raab added: “We will continue working with our partners to ensure those responsible for these deplorable acts will be held to account”.
