The Conservative Party lost two by-elections yesterday in Wakeford and Tiverton and Honiton. In Devon, the Liberal Democrats overturned the Conservative majority of more than 24,000, while in West Yorkshire Labour won the election with 47.9% of the vote.
Responding to the results this morning from Kigali, Rwanda Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that the Government have “got to recognise there is more we’ve got to do and we certainly will. We will keep going, addressing the concerns of people until we get through this patch”, noting the “difficulties faced over the cost of living”.
Home Secretary Priti Patel said that the Government would “listen” and “reflect” on what the voters are saying, and pledged to “provide the leadership that is clearly required in what are very difficult and challenging times”.
Following the results, Rt. Hon. Oliver Dowden MP, stepped down as Conservative Party Chairman. He thanked the “backbone” of the party – the volunteers and staffers “who work so tirelessly”.
