In the House of Lords today, Baroness Eaton underlined the need for an urgent renewal of the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, stating that a return to the negotiating table without preconditions is “the only way to achieve the lasting peace that we all want to see”.
She asked how the UK Government is helping to facilitate the resumption of direct peace talks.
Government Whip Baroness Goldie confirmed that the UK’s long-standing position is to support a negotiated settlement, emphasising, “we want that to lead to a safe and secure Israel living alongside a viable and sovereign Palestinian state”.
In response to a separate question about Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s recent antisemitic comments at the Palestinian National Council, Baroness Goldie said the Government viewed them as “deeply concerning”.
She added: “any attempt to justify or explain away any element of the Holocaust is completely unacceptable”.
