Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi visited Auschwitz Birkenau in Poland this week, joining a delegation of European lawmakers and Jewish communal figures in Poland to commemorate the 83rd anniversary of Kristallnacht.
Speaking to the Jewish Chronicle, Mr Zahawi said every school student in Britain should travel to Auschwitz to better understand Antisemitism, stating: “It’s the only way. We have to make sure young minds actually see this place, experience this place, and understand what took place here, and for them to pledge ‘never again’ for future generations”.
Writing exclusively the Jewish News following his visit, the Education Secretary underlined that “education is the vaccine against Antisemitism”.
He added: “If universities do not take action to meet expectations for preventing and tackling harassment during this academic year I may well ask the Office for Students to explore whether further action can be taken”. Organised by the European Jewish Association (EJA), the tour of Auschwitz was part of a two-day conference on fighting antisemitism.
The Education Secretary’s visit came as a newly published survey commissioned by the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, found that just over half of British people do not that know six million Jews died in the Holocaust.
