The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) targeted several military sites in Syria last night, in response to a an Iranian made missile fired at the Golan Heights in northern Israel.
The Iranian missile was intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome aerial defence system before it violated Israeli airspace.
Israeli spokesperson Ronen Manelis said: “The firing of the missile yesterday, a launch that could have killed civilians, was fired by Iranians out of Damascus within an area that we were promised that there would be no Iranians”.
He added: “The bottom line is that such a missile fired by Iranians from an area where they are not supposed to be, this is an Iranian attempt to attack Israel, to endanger civilians’ lives and military targets… This is the third time Iran has tried to attack Israel in the past year”.
Israel said that in response, an overnight operation targeted several military sites of the Iranian Quds forces, including a munitions storage, an intelligence site and a military training camp.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 11 military personnel were killed in the strikes, at least two of which were Syrian.
Syrian state media said that the Iranian missile was fired after its air defences repelled an Israeli strike of seven missiles in the south of the country earlier in the day.
Iran came under pressure last week when the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and a number of European partners “jointly raised with Iran our deep concerns about hostile activities and plots being planned and perpetrated in Europe”.
Today it was announced that Germany has banned the Iranian Airline Mahan Air, as a it is suspected of flying terrorists and arms to Damascus.
