Prominent figures and governments from around the world wished Israel a happy Independence Day  (Yom Ha’atzmaut) on Wednesday as the country celebrated the 72nd year since its foundation in 1948.

Independence Day followed Memorial Day in Israel for the country’s fallen soldiers and terror victims. At the end of Monday night’s nationally-televised Memorial Day ceremony, many Israelis across the country went on to their balconies or porches and sang the national anthem, “Hatikvah”.

The annual ceremony itself was held at the Western Wall in Jerusalem without an audience, due to coronavirus-related restrictions on public gatherings.

A total of 23,816 soldiers have died defending Israel, while 3,153 civilians have lost their lives in terrorist attacks throughout the country’s history.

The juxtaposition of Memorial Day and Independence Day is a key element of Israelis’ experience of their country’s anniversary, ensuring that no commemoration completely excludes the sacrifice of the fallen and their families.

Numerous Conservative parliamentarians sent their best wishes to Israel. Speaking on behalf of the Government in an online ceremony held by Bnei Akiva UK, Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick underlined: “We cherish our relationship with Israel and the special bond between our two peoples. A bond of friendship, of shared history, and a shared future. So, on this special day, Mazel Tov to everybody in Israel”.

Other Conservative well-wishers included CFI Officer Bob Blackman MP and new MPs Jonathan Gullis MP, Chris Clarkson MP and Robert Largan MP.

Yom Ha’atzmaut is usually celebrated in Israel with barbecues, outdoor concerts and fireworks, but this year, families convened in their own homes amid social distancing measures.
