Israel has been unanimously elected as the President of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, with its 2025 term coinciding with the IHRA’s 25th anniversary and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. This comes after Israel voted to adopt the IRHA’s definition of antisemitism.

The IHRA brings together 35 member countries and unites governments to promote Holocaust education and remembrance. The group also works with governments to create Holocaust-related policy, such as its working definition of antisemitism, which it released in 2016. The Knesset voted to adopt the IRHA’s definition of antisemitism on Wednesday.

Israel’s candidacy was presented in Stockholm by Yad Vashem Chairman Dani Dayan, with its delegation including representatives of both Yad Vashem and the Foreign Ministry. Dayan said the “IHRA’s activities have growing importance and significance in a time in which we see concerning phenomena of Holocaust distortion and antisemitism in different places around the world”.

Israel’s Foreign Minister, Yair Lapid said that Israel will always be “committed to preserving the memory of the Holocaust and fighting antisemitism”. Adding: “As the son of a holocaust survivor, I have the privilege and personal responsibility to continue perpetuating the memory of the Holocaust and the endless battle against antisemitism”.
