This week, the Israeli Embassy in London hosted a Christmas and Chanukah reception with the Conservative Christian Fellowship (CCF), with speakers including CFI Parliamentary Chairman Rt. Hon. Sir Eric Pickles MP.
At the reception, Sir Eric underlined the important ties between the Jewish and Christian communities in the UK and Israel, as well as between both countries.
Sir Eric highlighted that Israel was the only democracy in the region and the only place where Christians were safe to practice their faith without fear of persecution.
Ambassador of Israel H.E. Mark Regev told guests that Israel is the only place in the Middle East where the Christian population is growing.
Ambassador Regev said that as the centenary approaches in 2017, Britain should be proud of the Balfour Declaration. He said that the Declaration, a letter stating the British Government’s support for Jewish self-determination in Israel, was signed by Conservative Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour – a “Christian Zionist”.
Former Minister for Pensions, Baroness Altmann CBE, emphasised the welcoming atmosphere in the Conservative Party for minorities, speaking from her personal experience as a Jewish Government Minister.
CCF Parliamentary Chairman, John Glen MP, spoke about his recent visit to Israel with Conservative Friends of Israel, emphasising that Israel has great support in the Conservative Party.
CCF Executive Director, Gareth Wallace, also welcomed attendees to the festive event.
