A ceasefire was reached on Wednesday morning between Israel and Gaza-based terror groups after over 100 rockets were fired towards Israel in a 24-hour period and the IDF struck terror targets in response.
The rocket fire came after the death of prominent Palestinian Islamic Jihad member, Khader Adnan, who had been on hunger strike in an Israeli prison for the past three months, refusing medical assistance.
Tuesday afternoon saw 30 rockets fired at Israel, including 22 fired in a five-minute period. In response, the IDF targeted 16 Hamas and Islamic Jihad military sites in the Gaza Strip. Over 70 rockets were launched through the night.
Most rockets were intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome missile defence system or fell in open areas in Israel. At least 14 rockets landed short inside Gaza. Five hit urban areas within Israel and led to injuries including a 25-year-old foreign worker in Sderot on a construction site who was seriously injured.
The Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said a 58-year-old man, Hashel Mubarak, was killed, and five other civilians were wounded.
A ceasefire was brokered early Wednesday morning, mediated by officials from Egypt, Qatar and the UN.
