Two Israeli border police officers suffered injuries today after a Palestinian driver in Jerusalem rammed into them with his car, in what is said to be a deliberate attack.
According to reports, the driver veered off the road and deliberately rammed into the two policemen. The driver was shot by police and critically wounded after he tried to back up and run over the injured officers again, according to police. He was administered first aid at the scene but died shortly thereafter.
The incident occurred at the A-Tur junction in the north-east of Jerusalem. The injured officers, a man and a woman, were evacuated to hospital.
No immediate information on the driver’s identity was given, other than that he was a resident of East Jerusalem, a predominantly Palestinian part of the city.
Today’s incident follows a spate of similar deadly car-ramming attacks in Jerusalem and the West Bank since last autumn. Last week, four teenagers were hurt when a Palestinian motorist rammed into people waiting at a bus stop in the Etzion bloc of settlements.
