Prime Minister Liz Truss has reiterated her pledge to review a possible move of the British Embassy to Jerusalem, during a meeting with the Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Prime Minister Truss pledged a “review of the current situation” – the UK Embassy is currently based in Israel’s second city, Tel Aviv. The United States of America relocated its Embassy to Israel’s capital city in 2018.
The two leaders met on Thursday and a Downing Street spokesman said they discussed the “huge opportunities to boost cooperation between the UK and Israel on strategic priorities, including defence, cyber security, trade and green technology”.
Prime Minister Truss “welcomed the progress on a new Free Trade Agreement and reiterated the UK’s commitment to signing a high-ambition deal which delivers for the digital and services sectors”.
The two leaders agreed on the “need for a long-term strategy to contain the threat from Iran”, and also discussed “the importance of continued international unity in opposition to Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, including on economic sanctions”.
Prime Minster Lapid gave his personal condolences on the passing of Her Majesty the Queen and noted “the close ties between the British and Israeli people”.
