The Prince of Wales is set to attend the World Holocaust Forum at Yad Vashem, Jerusalem, to mark the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Whilst Prince Charles has been to Jerusalem twice before to attend the funerals of Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres, this will be his first official Royal visit to Israel.
In a statement, Clarence House said: “The World Holocaust Forum will be held at Yad Vashem, the World Holocaust Remembrance Centre in Jerusalem, and will commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau.
At the invitation of Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, the prince will also visit the Occupied Palestinian Territories where His Royal Highness will also undertake engagements on behalf of the British Government.”
His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh is visiting at the invitation of Israeli President Reuven Rivlin. This is the second ever Royal visit to Israel in just two years, after a period of 70 years since the founding of the state when no Royal member has visited in an official capacity.
The Duchess of Cornwall will also attend a Holocaust event when she travels to Poland to join commemorations marking the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the former Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. Approximately 200 Auschwitz and Holocaust survivors from the United Kingdom and several other European countries, the United States, Canada, Israel and Australia will take part in the service.
