On Friday night, Palestinian terrorists fired 10 rockets from the Gaza Strip at communities in southern Israel, following weeks of relative calm at the border.
While most of the rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defence system, one hit a house in Sderot, substantially damaging it. Luckily, the occupants of the house (a couple in their 40s and their children) were in a protected space when the rocket hit.
In response, the IDF exclusively targeted Hamas military assets in the Gaza Strip, including a naval command centre, weapons facilities and underground compounds.
As rulers of the Gaza Strip, Israel considers Hamas responsible for any terror activity emanating from the territory.
On Sunday evening, the European Union issued a statement condemning Hamas’ actions, saying: “The firing of rockets against civilian populations is unacceptable and must stop immediately and unconditionally”.
There have been over 780 rockets fired at Israel by Gaza-based terror groups so far in 2019.
