The UK government has announced it is working to expel Iran’s regime from the UN Commission on the Status of Women in response to a question asked by CFI’s Honorary President Lork Polak CBE. This decision comes following the murder of Mahsa Amini and the suppression of women and girls in the country protesting her death and the violent consequences they face for even slightly deviating from “morality laws” in the Islamic Republic.
Lord Polak asked Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, a Minister of State at the FCDO, “why the UK has not taken a lead at the United Nations to ensure that Iran is immediately suspended and removed as a member of the Commission on Women’s Rights”.
Lord Admad responded: “I ensure my noble friend on the CSW, I directed officials immediately and we’re working very closely hand in glove with the United States and other partners to ensure the removal of Iran on the UN Commission on the Status of Women, it cannot be right they continue to be a part of that body”.
According to UN Watch, if a draft resolution is introduced to expel Iran from the UN Commission on the Status of Women, the motion would pass by a vote of 28 to 11, with 15 abstaining or absent.
