The US reimposed oil and financial sanctions against Iran on Monday, significantly increasing pressure on the regime in order to hinder its missile and nuclear programmes and stall its growing military and political influence in the region.
The move will restore US sanctions that were lifted under 2015 nuclear deal signed by P5+1 world powers, named the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and add 300 new designations in Iran’s oil, shipping, insurance and banking sectors.
In May, US President Donald Trump declared that the US will be withdrawing from the JCPOA.
Remaining P5+1 world powers the UK, France, Germany, China and Russia, have said they will not leave the agreement.
In written statement this week, Middle East Minister Rt. Hon. Alistair Burt MP condemned Iran’s human rights record and the the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ “destabilising behaviour across the region”, but maintained that the UK remains committed to the JCPoA.
