This week, the Israeli Judicial Select Committee selected four new justices to serve on the Supreme Court including the first Arab Muslim to be appointed.

The newly appointed justices are Judge Ruth Ronnen, Judge Khaled Kabub, Judge Gila Kanfi-Steinitz and attorney Yechiel Kasher.

Judge Kabub, who currently serves as vice president of the Tel Aviv District Court, is the Supreme Court’s first Arab Muslim justice. Previous Israeli Arab justices were all Christian.

Judge Kanfi-Steinitz will be the court’s first female judge of Sephardi descent.

Israeli Justice Minister Gideon Sa’ar said: “The four new justices elected to the Supreme Court are excellent. They were selected according to the three criteria I set: excellence, balance and diversity. A variety of opinions, genders and ethnic backgrounds”.

The Supreme Court in Jerusalem is the highest court of Israel and the final court of appeals, consisting of 15 justices.
