Israel’s Foreign Minister Yair Lapid met with Jordan’s King Abdullah II and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi to discuss efforts to work together to lower tensions between Israelis and Palestinians in the lead up to Ramadan and Passover.

On Twitter after the meeting, Israel’s Foreign Minister exclaimed that Israel and Jordan would collaborate to “calm tensions and promote understanding”. He went on to explain that the two countries have a “special relationship” that is not “just good neighbourliness” but is actually a “moral responsibility to both our peoples”.

The meeting comes after several weeks of increased violence in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, and a month after the Times of Israel reported that Israel had been asked by the Biden Administration to take steps to prevent another conflict like what occurred in May 2021 between Hamas and Israel. The major religious festivals often coincide with heightened tensions and violent incidents in the region.

After the meeting a statement by Jordan’s Royal Hashemite Court reiterated the King’s position on the conflict, saying he “reaffirm[ed] the need to step up efforts to achieve just and comprehensive peace on the basis of the two-state solution”.
